It is hard to believe that the well-known fashion house of Balenciaga was founded by a 16-year-old youngster, but Cristobal Balenciaga really did it and did it quite successfully.

Balenciaga started his career in fashion when he was just thirteen, when one of the members of the Spanish royal family, marquise Torres, whose passionate admirer Balenciaga was, invited him to design a dress for her. That was the beginning of the legend.

Shortly after he went to Paris, where his work enjoyed an immediate success. He joined Doucet, Worth and Drecoll, very popular fashion houses at the beginning of the XX century.

When he was only 16, Balenciaga established his first couture house and the wheel of history began its move.
During the XX century the Balenciaga Fashion House saw a lot of ups and downs, but the most crushing blow was struck in 1997, when a Josephus Thimister show nearly ruined the prestige of the company.

Fortunately, in the very same year, Nicolas Ghesquire, who became creative director of the House, managed to turn the wheel of fortune back to the company. He restored the highest haute couture and classical style standards established by Cristobal Balenciaga, thereby bringing the company back to life.

Nicolas Ghesquire did a lot in creating handbags – suffice it to mention his famous Motorcycle Bag, which appeared in the 2001 spring collection. It made a splash in the sphere of handbags design and became an immediate success with such celebrities as Sarah Jessica Parker or Paris and Nicky Hilton. Thousands of women started craving for a bag from Balenciaga, doing their best to make their dream come true.
